What to Expect From a Diagnostic Consultation

A diagnostic consultation is an opportunity to discuss your health concerns, understand the next appropriate steps, and leave with a clearer plan for your care.

Start with the questions that matter to you

Before your appointment, take a few minutes to note the symptoms, changes, or concerns you want to discuss. Include when they started, what seems to improve or worsen them, and how they affect your daily routine. A short list helps the conversation stay focused on what matters most to you.

It can also be useful to bring a current list of medications, relevant medical history, and any recent test results. These details give your clinician a fuller picture and help avoid unnecessary repetition.

During your appointment

Your clinician will listen to your concerns, ask follow-up questions, and may complete a focused assessment. Depending on your needs, they might recommend laboratory work, imaging, monitoring, or a specialist referral. You should feel comfortable asking why a test is suggested and what information it is expected to provide.

“The goal is not simply to order tests. It is to understand the right question to ask, then choose the assessment that can help answer it.”

Clear communication is essential. If medical terms are unfamiliar, ask for a simpler explanation. A good consultation leaves you knowing what will happen next, when to expect results, and who to contact if you have questions.

After the consultation

Once your results are available, your care team will explain what they mean in the context of your symptoms and health history. Results are only one part of the picture, so the next step may be reassurance, a follow-up appointment, lifestyle guidance, or a more detailed care plan.

Keep a copy of your plan and any recommendations. If a new symptom develops or you are unsure about an instruction, contact the clinic rather than waiting for your next visit.
